Len was born in England where he first became interested in painting while at school. He came to Canada in 1968 but it was not until 1985 that his interest in painting, particularly in transparent watercolours, was re-awakened. Len now lives with his wife, Sheila, in London, Ontario
Len particularly enjoys the transparency, fluidity and speed of watercolour. He tends to use watercolours boldly with pure colours in rich washes to exploit the richness and vibrancy of the medium. Watercolour’s uniqueness as a fluid and spontaneous medium particularly appeals to him.
Landscapes, featuring water and its reflections, are
one of his favourite subjects. So too are the town
and village scenes of the Languedoc region of
southern France which he has frequently visited.
Like many artists, he has been influenced by the works of the French Impressionists and the Group of Seven, and their unique use of colour to convey the effect of sunlight.
His philosophy towards painting is modelled on the approach of Sir Winston Churchill, an accomplished artist,
who said that contentment is “a joyride in a paint-box for which audacity is the only ticket.”
As well as having had solo exhibitions of his work, Len has also exhibited his work in numerous juried and non-juried group exhibitions in London, including Museum London. He has received
various awards for his work. His work can be found at Museum London’s Art Rental and Sales.
